Origin of Family B Gilmores
Note: The names below in bold are the ones that continue to the next generation. The other names either haven’t yet been researched or never had children. The children for generation 8 are not listed therefore there are no bold names in generation 8. I stopped the publication of information at generation 7 for the sake of privacy to leave an 80+ year gap (a federal law governing the sharing of information, i.e. census data, etc) for the children (generation 9) of the people listed in generation 8. Time permitting I’ll look closer at this generation and insert the information of anyone who has passed away at or beyond this 80 year gap.
Note #2: I’m starting to add more people and have noticed a big organizational problem. I’m going to reorganize but in the interest of getting what I got out there, for now I’ll just note what I’m adding and how you can get to the newly added below:

Origin of Family B Gilmores
The exact time that the Family B Gilmores migrated to America and where in Ireland or Scotland they lived isn’t known for sure. Using the historical accounts of that time there appears to be two possibilities for their origin: Scotch/Irish or Highland Scots.
A favorite hypothesis of mine is that the Family B Gilmores came to America in 1718 from northern Ireland, a part of a group of lowland Scots that migrated to Ulster, Ireland during the plantation period in the 1600’s early 1700’s when England was trying to control the Irish by settling their land. Thiswould make them a part of the group which history has dubbed the Scotch-Irish. Large groups of them started migrating to America in 1718 because of religious conflict and high rents and taxation on property. A protestant congregation of Scotch-Irish sent Reverend William Boyd of Macasky to petition the governor of New England, Samuel Shuttes, to settle land in New England. Two Gilmores signed this petition, Samuel Gillmor and James Gillmor; but 4 Gilmores came over in boats in 1718/19. Samuel Gillmor, James Gillmor, William Gilmore, and Robert Gilmore. It appears that William and Robert Gilmore came over with Rev. James McGregor’s congregation from Aghadowey Parish of County Londonderry in the Bann Valley and Samuel Gillmor and James Gillmor came with the Rev. William Boyd’s congregation of Macosquin Parish also in the Bann Valley in County Londonderry. The two parishes are next to each other. It appears that by 1719, all but Samuel Gillmor settled in a town called Londonderry, NH, some migrating north into Maine and Canada. It is Samuel Gillmor that I’m targeting as a possible patriarch to the Family B Gilmores and the first to come to America. This Samuel Gillmor would be denoted as B0 ? Gilmore in the Genealogy Report below in the 1st generation.
Having expounded on the possibility that Family B are Scotch-Irish, let me now say that they could also have migrated directly from Highland Scotland from the county of Argyle. This possibility stems from the fact that Family B and Family A Gilmores seem to have settled on the edge a community of these Highland Scots in Cumberland Co., NC. However, the other side of the edge was largely Scotch/Irish settlers.
The original Argyll colony settled that area in 1739, but the colony encouraged other Scots to settle the area as well. Because the Highland Scots of NC were known to be Loyalists, I’m leaning toward the Scots/Irish origin for the Family B Gilmores as these
Gilmores fought in the militia for the continental army.
Familial Relationships
The familial relationships of the third generation Gilmores is also in question . The earliest Family B Gilmores found in America start showing up in records in Albemarle Co., VA: B01[1] John Gilmore (1745-1753), B01[2] William Gilmore (1748), and Ann Gilmore(1753)-not yet placed in the genealogy chart. There is also a probable uncle of B01[1] John Gilmore, B02 Hughriah Gilmore, who shows up for the first time in Johnson Co., NC in 1749. He is denoted as B02 in the genealogy chart below.
It appears John and William Gilmore followed their uncle Hughriah into NC. Several records show they along with some new Gilmore names lived in Cumberland Co., NC: B01[2] William (1753); B01[1] John (1754), B01[3] Hugh (1755), and B01[4] Stephen (1755).
I believe it very likely that all the Gilmores of Cumberland Co., NC mentioned above are related to B01[1] John somehow, possibly brothers. Ann Gilmore mentioned above is a complete mystery with no clue as to her age or relationship to the other Gilmores except she’s related to them somehow. As to her surname possibly she’s a granddaughter or daughter or sister of James Mahoney/Matrum.
Another Gilmore who is a complete mystery of this generation is Isabelle Gilmore who appears as a landowner in 1769 above William Moore’s plantation surrounded by Heards and Gilmores. It has been speculated that she is possibly the wife of William Gilmore and that William and Isabelle are the father and mother of the 3rd generation John, Hugh and Stephen. Upon further research it appears that she probably isn’t the wife of William as he is still living at the time she purchases land. She isn’t the wife of any of the other Gilmores living in Cumberland Co., NC at the time either for the same reason.
The possible uncle of B01[1] John Gilmore, Hughriah/Huriah (the oldest known Gilmore of Family B line thus far), arrived in Johnston Co., NC in 1749. Records indicate Huriah Sr. and his wife tried to travel down into SC at this time but were killed or died in route. Records also suggest this Huriah Sr. had a son Huriah as well as a daughter, Eleanor. It appears the son, Hugh/Huriah? Age 12 was assigned to Hugh Gilmore as an apprentice and the daughter went to B01[1] John Gilmore to be raised in 1761. Huriah Jr.’s Revolutionary War pension application states that he was raised by a cousin so I’m interpreting that John and Hugh were cousins of Huriah and Eleanor.
A family associated with the Gilmores at least since Albemarle Co., VA starting in 1745 and onward are the Heards. Using a Heard genealogy compiled by Joyce Poole, it appears that a Charles Heard born 1695ish (calculated from possible oldest son Stephen Heard whose birth date is also estimated or guessed at) was the father-in-law to B01[1] John Gilmore as this John appears to have married Charles Heard’s daughter, Jane. There is no marriage record of this union as the earliest recorded marriage in Albemarle Co., VA was in 1780.
There are brief references to Heards in the part of Chester Co., PA that later became Lancaster Co., PA that might be the Heards asscociated with Family B Gilmores. These instances were a Stephen Heard mentioned in a will of John Cohlan of Sadsbury Twp. in 1727, Charles Heard (possible father of Jane Heard Gilmore) mentioned on a tax list in New London, Chester, PA in 1740, and George Heard who married Elenore Boyd in Lancaster County, PA in 1740. These three Heards are believed to be siblings according to the Heard Genealogy compiled by Poole. When checking for Gilmores around this time period in Lancaster Co., PA, a list of landowners in the Colerain Township near Sadisbury mentions a William Gilmore Warrant 1739 and John Gilmore Warrant 1753. These two names looked very promising as the family B Gilmores; however this John couldn’t possibly be the Family B John as he was in Albemarle Co., VA in 1753; however, it is possible that this John Gilmore is the father of a John Gilmore who fought in the Rev. War in Cumberland Co., NC of Family A. The William Gilmore might be a candidate as the father for for Family B’s Generation 3.
So at this point, the Family B Gilmore’s familial relationships in the 3rd generation is strictly hyposthesis.
Family B and Family A are connected. Both families seem to have connections in Maryland. Family B’s Maryland connection comes from court minutes for Cumb. Co., NC recording a Bill of Sale in 1763 of B01[4] Stephen Gilmore giving power of attorney to Alexander Buchannan to dispose of 22 head of cattle running at large in or about 10 miles of Frederick Town in Maryland, and Family A’s connection comes from a Robert Gilmore who was a merchant in Boston and bought land in Lincoln Co., GA where Family A’s patriarchs John and James Gilmore lived. Robert Gilmore died in 1814. James Gilmore who I believe to be A0[1] James Gilmore was Robert’s temporary administrator.
