Notes for William J. Smith:
For the longest time, I thought that William and Frances had only one child, William Frances “Frank” Smith, but I’ve recently ran across a cousin, Brent Smith whose ancestor is a John Wesley Smith. In an email to me dated 17 Feb 2020 Brent stated, ” JW’s oldest daughter Dolia said in an old family video that JW had a brother named Frank. The first we ever heard that.” The JW he refers to is his great grandfather, John Wesley Smith. There is a bit of discrepancy on what John Wesley Smith’s actual birth year is. The census records all support 1868, but his death certificate states 1865. This poses a problem on whether John Wesley Smith’s mother is Frances E Gilmore who married WJ Smith in 1863, or Sarah Gilmore who married WJ Smith in 1867. Because of the unanimous support from the census records for John Wesley Smith’s birthyear being 1868, I tend to think the birthdate on his death certificate is wrong.
From my end, I know that my William Frances Smith is a part of my Gilmore line because of a deed in Hays Co., TX for John Wesley Gilmore. In 1875, John Wesley Gilmore deeded all his land to his son Augustine Edward Gilmore and his grandson, William Frances Smith, each having half ownership, and moved to Llano Co., TX with his new wife, Mrs. Elvina Massey Crapps Gilmore. In 1880 Hays Co., TX, William J Smith and Frances Gilmore Smith’s only son, William Frances Smith age 16, is living with his aunt and uncle, James F. and Cassie Gilmore Massey. In 1881, Augustine Edward Gilmore sells his half of the land to his brother in law, James F. Massey. Sometime between 1880 and 1884, it appears, or so I thought, that William Frances Smith dies by 1884 as his half of the land is sold by his uncles C. W. Gilmore, George S. Gilmore and aunt, Manuallar Gilmore Massey to his uncle that he lived with in 1880, James F. Massey. Even though I find no record of this, it appears that the land fell to C. W., G. S. maybe upon his death. In the 1884 deed, there is mention this land being deeded to “me and W. F. Smith …from J. W. Gilmore dated July 17, 1875”. The “me” here must be Augustine Edward Gilmore though his name isn’t mentioned in the 1884 deed. Another aunt; living at the time of this deed that isn’t mentioned is Cassie Gilmore Massey. It seems she should also have had interest in the 1/2 of the land that was W. F. Smith’s; however, since she was wife to the man the land was being deeded to maybe there was no need of mention of her name in the deed along with her brothers and sister. It now appears that instead of dying, William Frances “Frank” Smith he may have married women in Hays Co and Bastrop Co. It appears he may have married 3 women, Aurelia Simpson 28 Dec 1884 in Hays Co., TX; Eliza Cannada 18 Sept 1887 in Hays Co., TX; and Lee J Tanner 23 Dec 1890 in Bastrop Co., TX. Of course the Smith name is so prevalent that one or all these marriage may not apply to this William Frances “Frank” Smith, but there is DNA evidence that suggests the last marriage at least may be correct for the Frank Smith in this genealogy. Could it just be that William Frances Smith gave power of attorney to his Gilmore aunts and uncles to give 1/2 of his grandfather’s land to the couple who helped raise him, James Foster and Castanuellar Gilmore Massey?

Notes for William Jasper* Smith and Sarah Gilmore:
There is a census record of a William and Sarah Smith in the 1880 Bastrop Co., TX census; however, even though this Sarah would be the right age to be the Sarah Gilmore here, the age and birthplace of William in this record is way off. I do not believe them to be the same as the William Jasper Smith and Sarah Gilmore Smith in this genealogy. It is probable that Sarah Gilmore Smith died before 1870 as it appears that William Jasper Smith may have married a 3rd time to Ada Chapman in 1870.
Note that William Frances Smith appears to be living with his maternal aunt and uncle, Castanuallar Gilmore Massey and James Foster Massey in 1880 Hays Co., TX and John Wesley Smith, likely son of the same William Jasper Smith and Sarah Gilmore Smith (Frances E Gilmore’s sister) appears to be living with his paternal grandparents, Lewis and Elizabeth Smith in the 1880 Bastrop Co., TX census. Why aren’t these two children living with their father and new wife, Ada Chapman Smith in the 1880 census?There is family lore in Brent Smith’s family that his great grandfather’s, John Wesley Smith’s, mother was an “indian squaw”. There is family lore in my Gilmore line that we have Cherokee ancestry through one of the women that the Gilmore men married. In interviews with a great uncle, Pete Gilmore, and some of my grandpa Gilmore’s 1st cousins, the Cherokee link may be through my ggg grandmother, Martha “Patsy” Weaver, Frances E. and Sarah Gilmore’s mother. I still haven’t been able to document this family lore though it seems more likely given Brent’s families perspective. Pure speculation here but could there have been a bit of discrimination on Ada Chapman’s part to the point of not wanting to raise her new husband’s two previous children??? The two kids in question were raised seperately and only Brent’s aunt’s interview, the close DNA match between my mother and Brent, and a deed record in Hays Co., TX naming William Frances Smith as a grandson to John Wesley Gilmore together revealed there were two Gilmore/Smith children and not just one as I had first thought. I wonder why they were seperated between the two families?

The San Andres Light Horse Brigade, Co. D, captained by Charles Marion Lesueur, was originally formed in Milam Co., TX probably around 10 June 1861 as this is the earliest muster roll found for the company. Only William Humphrey Gilmore and his father are on this roll. In 16 Sept. 1861, the Brigade was mustered into the 4th TX Mounted Volunteers in San Antonio, TX under General Sibley. The Brigade included Companies A-F. They were known as Sibley’s brigade. Sibley’s brigade took part in battles within 3 states:

Notes for George Shafer Gilmore:
According to Peck, Skeet and Edith, George Shafer Gilmore(their grandfather) was a red headed man. They were told he died of a growth in the neck. At one time they had a picture of him but it was destroyed in a flood.
Pete, another grandson of George Shafer Gilmore recalls being told by his father, Norman Edward Gilmore, that George Shafer was scratched in the neck by one of his girls. The scratch turned cancerous on the jugular and he bleed to death. Another recollection Pete passed on from his father was that George Shafer owned a syrup mill and made syrup every summer. His father did the same thing. Pete remembered driving the mule around a vat to stir the syrup which was loaded into gallon buckets and sold in Austin.
There is a legend of Cherokee blood in this branch of the Gilmore family. This comes from the older members of the family, Peck, Skeet, and Edith whose lineage is through George Shafer Gilmore to Charles Monroe Gilmore their father, and from Pete, whose lineage is through George Shafer Gilmore to Norman Edward Gilmore his father. Skeet thought the Indian blood came from the Weaver side of the family which would be their great grandmother who married John Wesley Gilmore. This is highly unlikely as the Weaver family has been thoroughly searched with no sign of an Indian connection. Another suggestion came from Pete who thought the connection came from Sarah Louise Bryant Gilmore wife of George Shafer Gilmore. He stated that Sarah Louise’s mother, Mary Elizabeth Barringer Bryant was Cherokee. I’ve researched her and this doesn’t appear correct either.
To try and get a handle on this legend of Cherokee blood, I started looking at appearances of my living ancestors and of the other lineage through Charles Monroe Gilmore. All of the children on Charles Monroe Gilmore’s lineage were red headed and light complected so I’m beginning to think the possible Cherokee blood didn’t hit this lineage. My uncles which are through Norman Edwards lineage are all dark complected and dark headed as is my only aunt in this line. The only exception to this trend is my mother whose hair was white as a girl and turned brown as she got older. Her complexion is also light. Their father was also dark complected and dark headed, however, his father, Norman Edward, wasn’t, so maybe the Cherokee blood comes in from Norman Edward’s wife, Mary Elizabeth Edwards. This is a possibility that needs to be researched. I’ve started this process but have run into some dead ends. It also appears that the Cherokee stand (if it exists) might have come down from Martha “Patsy” Gilmore’s line.
