Generation 3

B01[1]1 (SAMUEL) GILMORE (John3, ?2, ?1) was born on 22 Mar 1748 in Albemarle Co., VA. He died on 18 Mar 1800 in Tatnall Co., GA. He married Elizabeth (Folk) about 1781 in Cumberland Co., NC. She was born on 02 Oct 1756. She died on 21 Jul 1830 in Tatnall Co., GA.

Notes for (Samuel) Gilmore:

I’ve found no original documents proving Samuel as son of John and Jane Heard Gilmore. He is mentioned in several land records w/ John and some of the other “brothers” listed in this chart, however, so he seems to be related in some capacity to this family.

There was a genealogy chart printed in the “Gilmore Newsletter” published by William Gilmore in the 1980’s. A compilation of these newsletters are in the Clayton Library in Houston, TX. The sources for this genealogy chart were Jacqueline Knisley (retired from this research), Elizabeth Sue Gilmore Gorence, L. L. Gilmore, Janie E. Gilmore, Charles R. Clemson, Edna Wayne Gilmore, Mrs. W. M. Gilmore, and R. L. Gilmore.

(Samuel) Gilmore and Elizabeth (Folk) had the following children:

B01[1]11 B01[1]11 JOHN HEARD GILMORE was born on 09 Oct 1782 in Cumberland Co., NC. He died on 16 Apr 1834 in Henry Co., AL. He married Hollan Hodges, daughter of Edmund Hodges and Patience Hodges, on 11 Nov 1806. She was born on 14 Oct 1786. She died on 05 Feb 1857 in Henry Co., AL.

B01[1]12  ELIZABETH (CATHERINE) GILMORE was born on 03 Dec 1784 in Wilkes Co., GA. She died about 1830 in Tatnall Co., GA. She married Allan Johnson about 1802. He was born about 1772 in NC. He died on 07 Sep 1835 in Tatnall Co., GA.

B01[1]13 MARY GILMORE was born on 27 Jul 1787 in Wilkes Co., GA.

B01[1]14 NANCY GILMORE was born on 05 Dec 1789 in Wilkes Co., GA. She died about 1844 in Henry Co., AL. She married Julius Martin about 1805. He died before 23 Nov 1828 in Henry Co., AL.

B01[1]15 SAMUEL GILMORE was born on 04 Mar 1792 in Washington Co., GA. He died on 03 Dec 1807.

B01[1]16 HENRY GASTON GILMORE was born on 15 Aug 1794 in Washington Co., GA. He died on 07 Dec 1807.

B01[1]3 HUMPHREY GILMORE (John3, ?2, ?1) was born on 10 Apr 1751 in Albemarle Co., VA*. He died on 03 Jan 1802 in Greene Co., GA. He married CATHERINE WILEY, daughter of William Wiley and *Elizabeth, on 13 Dec 1772 in Cumberland Co., NC. She was born on 09 Mar 1753 in Va?.

Notes for Humphrey Gilmore:

It appears that Humphrey Gilmore was the first to join the Methodist Church after years of being Presbyterian.  He was ordained a Deacon for the church a year before his death in 1802 in Greene Co., GA.  He must have joined the church at least 5 years prior to this as it takes that long or more to rise to Deacon.

The first conference for the Methodist Church was 1773 in Maryland and even then, the church really didn’t solidify until 1784 in America.

About eleven years after Humphrey Gilmore’s death (either the end of 1812 or 1813), it appears that the family decided to migrate to Tennessee. The decision to do this was probably B01[1]1 John Gilmore, the oldest son in the family who probably helped with the raising of the rest of his siblings. He was newly married and was only 25 years of age at the time of his father’s death . The children who chose to go to TN were probably John age 37, Elijah age 26, Wylie age 21,and George Washington age 19. I’ve seen where many believe that their mother went with them but I think that she along with her under age children went with her daughter, Nancy who was then married to Joel Heard.

Joel Heard was in the war of 1812 in the Mississippi Territory which was southern AL. Old tax records that survived for Clarke Co., AL suggest that Betsey Cartwright Gilmore was in Clarke County, AL by 1814.

The area into which B01[1]1 John and the other mentioned brothers moved in central Tennessee is a black hole of primary genealogical records. The only primary record I could find is a muster roll in Bedford Co., TN taken 13 Nov. 1814 of the 1st Regiment of Metcalfe’s W. TN Militia which Elijah Gilmore, Wylie Gilmore and George W. Gilmore were present for. This regiment fought in the battle of New Orleans at the end of the war of 1812. B01[1]1 John Gilmore probably isn’t on it because he was a bit too old, 38 and he was head of the family and still had siblings at home along with his own kids at this time, plus he was at this time probably a local preacher. (Two secondary sources, a book by Anson West, called History of Methodism in Alabama; and Ophelia Gilmore’s notes claim that John Gilmore was licensed to preach in 1813 and that he did so in Warren Co., TN. Ophelia mentions in a letter that they lived in McMinnville, TN until the close of the War of 1812 and moved in 1816 into Alabama.)

NOTE: A Tax Record that survived in Bedford Co., TN in 1814 has no mention of Gilmore so maybe they were living in Warren Co., TN at the time the three brother’s enlisted.  No tax records survived for that year in Warren Co., TN.

Along with Ophelia Gilmore, Anson West in has book claims that this Gilmore family moved into Alabama in 1816 and that John settled right off the Tombigbee River on the midwestern border of Clarke Co., AL in a neighborhood called Woods Bluff and that Elijah Gilmore settled in a neighborhood in central Clarke Co., AL called Grove Hill.

The same reconstructed records for Alabama mentioned above shows that a John Gilmore was in Clarke County, AL by 1815 (note:  This John Gilmore may be the one in Family A that moved to this area by 1803 and not B01[1]31 John Gilmore). By 1816, George and John Gilmore are listed and they are also in the 1818 tax list.

Betsy is only mentioned once in 1814 plus Elijah is never mentioned on this list between 1814-1818–maybe he was in a bordering county whose tax lists were lost?  There is also a marriage record of George Washington Gilmore to Nancy Ann Newton in Clarke Co., AL Dec 1818.

It appears that Wylie did not follow what was left of the family to Alabama in 1816. Instead census records have him in Anson Co., NC in 1820. After 1820 he went back to GA and then into eastern AL.

The brothers later moved into Wilcox Co., AL. John Gilmore received a patent for land in 1824 in Wilcox County, AL in the northern part of the county just east of Pine Hill; Elijah Gilmore for land in 1834 in the northern most part of Wilcox Co., AL; and George Washington Gilmore for land in 1826 in the northern most part of Clarke Co., AL right on the border. Note that before  Family B Gilmore family came to this area, another Gilmore family whose head was A01 John Gilmore moved to this area in 1803 when it was the Mississippi Territory in Alabama. This John Gilmore had a Revolutionary War Pension application that stated he lived in Washington County then Clarke County, Wilcox County and lastly Marengo County.  Therefore, any record I’ve stated as being John Gilmore’s from the family in this study could have also been the other John Gilmore; however, a timeline I have written for the other John suggests the records above are the John Gilmore of Family B.

The only brother out of this group to stay in Clarke Co., AL was Stephen Martyr Gilmore, the youngest. Elijah Gilmore did stay most of the rest of his life in Clarke Co., AL; but moved into Clarke Co., MS later in life. The rest of the brother’s moved out of the area into MS and TX. Their stories are on their personal pages.

Humphrey Gilmore and Catherine Wiley had the following children:

B02[3]3 HENRY G. GILMORE (Huriah3, Huriah/Hughriah “Hugh”2, ?1) was born in 1784 in Wilkes Co., GA. He died on 24 Jul 1846 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL. He married (1) MARY G. MCDANIEL about 1804 in GA or TN. She was born on 18 Oct 1782 in TN. She died on 11 Nov 1828 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL. He married (2) CAROLINE (JOUETT OR VANWINKLE) about 1830 in TN or IL. She was born on 08 Nov 1804 in TN. She died on 10 Apr 1884 in Greene Co., IL.

Notes for Henry G Gilmore:

I modeled this family using the census records from 1820-1860. If I’m reading them right, there appears to be an extra girl and boy that I don’t know the names of. I also used a couple of public family trees on ancestry.com–“Lonergan Family Tree” for the most part and a little from “Gilmore Mac from Sally Jaquet”. I rearranged the order of the children by changing the “estimated” births to better fit the census records. Also, given the 6 year gap in births between Elizabeth and James H. Gilmore, I suspect Henry G. remarried before James H. and Celia were born which disagrees with the Lonergan and the Gilmore Mac trees I used on ancestry.com.

My hypothesis of how many children were in Henry G. Gilmore’s family also disagrees with Sarah Neely who stated that there were 15 children in this family. I’ve managed 18 through census records. This could be because 3 of the kids weren’t actually children of Henry G. Gilmore or it could be because three of them were only represented in the 1820 census and either died or married before 1830.

Henry G Gilmore and Mary G. McDaniel had the following children:

B02[2]31 girl Gilmore

Notes for girl Gilmore:

This girl Gilmore born 1804-1810 is in the 1820 Bedford Co., TN census and possible the 1830 Morgan Co., IL Census for Henry Gilmore. She may be of another relation other than daughter. Also it’s unclear whether she is in the 1830 census of Henry’s household as she and her stepmother are of comparable age. Girl Gilmore either married before 1830, after 1830 or died before or after 1830.

One other scenario is this girl Gilmore is actually Caroline Jouett/Vanwinkle who lived with the family.

If she is a daughter of Henry G Gilmore and Mary McDaniel Gilmore, one possibility is she is Clarrissa who married John Reynolds and is enumerated as the next family after John M. Gilmore in Greene Co., IL.

According to the census she was born in Tennessee. A John Reynolds also appears in Morgan Co., IL in 1840 that might be the same Reynolds family. I couldn’t find the John Reynolds family in 1860. I also checked marriage records for Illinois and couldn’t find a marriage record for John Reynolds marrying Clarrissa.

B02[2]32  SARAH JANE GILMORE was born about 1807 in TN. She died after 1880 in Greene Co., GA. She married John Shaunce on 04 Apr 1829 in Morgan Co., IL. He was born about 1804 in Pennsylvania. He died before 1870 in Greene Co., GA.

B02[2]33 JOHN MCDANIEL GILMORE was born on 29 Jul 1809 in TN. He died on 10 Jan 1883 in Morgan Co., IL. He married Rachael Stockton on 27 Jan 1832 in Morgan Co., IL. She was born in Oct 1811 in KY.

B02[2]34 ?MUEL GILMORE was born about 1811 in Overton Co., TN. He died about 1822 in Bedford Co., TN.

B02[2]35 WILLIAM H. GILMORE was born about 1813 in TN. He married Charlotte Elizabeth Dudhope on 29 Oct 1839 in Pike Co., IL. She was born about 1820 in Scotland.

B02[2]36 MARY GILMORE was born about 1815 in TN.

B02[2]37 BOY GILMORE was born about 1817.

B02[2]38 ELIZABETH GILMORE was born on 01 Feb 1819 in Bedford Co., TN. She died on 04 Feb 1909 in Greene Co., IL. She married James R. Spencer on 01 Jun 1835 in Morgan Co., IL. He was born about 1814 in IN.

B02[2]39 ?JAMES H. GILMORE was born about 1825 in TN.

B02[2]3(10) CELIA GILMORE was born about 1828 in TN. She married (1) ELIAS BROWN on 18 Mar 1845 in Greene Co., IL. He died about 1849 in Greene Co., IL. She married (2) WILLIAM MILLER. He was born about 1824 in KY. She married (3) ?JERROLD?.

Notes for Caroline (Jouett or Vanwinkle):

I originally thought that Caroline’s last name was Jouett; but ran across a source that said it was Vanwinkle on “Gilmore Mac from Sally Jacquet” website. I simply don’t know enough about this family to have an opinion on that yet. It could be both are wrong. I’m also confused as to the marriage date for Henry and Caroline as Caroline was the same age as Henry’s oldest daughter.

The 1830 census could be showing Caroline or the oldest daughter living in the household so there’s a question as to whether Caroline married Henry just prior to 1830 or during or after 1830. She married him sometime between 1828 (Henry’s first wifes death date) and 1832 (the birthdate of Henry and Caroline’s first child.

A discrepancy I’ve found on the public family tree’s of this family on Ancestry.com is Margaret being a child of Henry G. Gilmore and Caroline. According to census records, Margaret doesn’t appear to exist unless she was born and died between census’. Also, Sarah Neely mentions this family consisted of 15 children. Census records suggest there were 17 children.

Another discrepency I’ve found is Julie Ann Gilmore’s birthdate. The Lonergan Family Tree on ancesty.com has a rather exact birthdate of 12 Jul 1834. If you compare Julie Ann’s birthdate with her brother George W.’s birthdate you’ll find it means their mother had them within a 7 month period. I changed Julie Ann’s birthdate because the Lonergan birthdate also isn’t consistant with the census records which gives a birthdate of approximately 1838.

Henry G Gilmore and Caroline (Jouett or Vanwinkle)had the following children:

B02[2]3(11) GEORGE W. GILMORE was born on 04 Dec 1832 in Morgan Co., IL. He died on 30 Mar 1852 in Greene Co., IL.

Notes for George W. Gilmore:

Either George W. or Julie Ann Gilmore’s birth year is wrong as it’s mathematically impossible to be born 7 months apart.

B02[2]3(12) FRANCES M. GILMORE was born about 1833 in Morgan Co., IL. He died on 30 Mar 1866 in Greene Co., IL.

B02[2]3(13) WILEY LAFAYETTE GILMORE was born on 16 Jul 1836 in Morgan Co., IL. He died on 05 Feb 1898 in Greene Co., IL. He married (1) MARY JANE SMITH on 03 Mar 1858 in Greene Co., IL. She was born about 1838 in IL. She died between 1862-1866 in IL. He married (2) JULIE O. SMITH on 12 Mar 1866 in Greene Co., IL. She was born in Jul 1848 in IL.

B02[2]3(14) JULIE ANN GILMORE was born about 1838 in Morgan Co., IL. She died on 13 Jul 1854 in Morgan Co., IL. She married Isaac Barnett on 24 Sep 1853 in Greene Co., IL.

Notes for Julie Ann Gilmore:

The Lonergan Family Tree and others on Ancestry.com have her birthdate at 12 Jul 1834 but census records are insistant that her birth year is c1838, plus it’s mathematically impossible for her birthdate to be 12 Jul 1834 given her brother George W. Gilmore’s date of 4 Dec 1833.

B02[2]3(15) CHARLES NEWTON GILMORE was born in Jan 1839 in Morgan Co., IL. He died on 13 May 1927 in Greene Co., IL. He married Sarah Ann Barnett on 25 Dec 1859 in Greene Co., IL. She was born in Oct 1837 in IL.

B02[2]3(16) MANDA (ELIZABETH OR EVALYN) GILMORE was born on 21 May 1841 in Morgan Co., IL. She died on 12 Nov 1917 in Sangamon Co.,IL. She married JAMES REDDING. He was born about 1839 in IL. He died before 1900 in IL.

B02[2]3(17) CARROLL GILMORE was born in Apr 1843 in Greene Co., IL. He died on 11 Sep 1917 in Morgan Co., IL. He married Sarah J Spencer on 18 Dec 1862 in Morgan Co., IL. She was born in Mar 1849 in IL.
