Generation 1:

B01 (?) GILMORE was born before 1698 in Ulster Ireland or Highland Scotland????. 1

Notes for B01 ? Gilmore:

From the Passenger and Immigration Lists indices I see no entry for immigrant Hughriah Gilmore (the oldest known Gilmore of Family B) which begs the question did the immigration record get lost or did Hughriah Gilmore migrate to America as a minor? If the second scenario is correct, and I have a good approximation for his age, then the family migrated to America prior to 1727.   Hughriah’s approximate birth year would make him 16 years old in 1727.  Records suggest that Hughriah was much younger than the brother who is the patriarch of another known Family B Gilmore, B01[1] John Gilmore.  It is known that B01[3] Hugh Gilmore, and by association B01[1] John Gilmore are nephews of B02 Hughriah Gilmore.  I’m working off of a hypothesis that B01 ? Gilmore is the one that shows up in immigration records and B02 Hughriah Gilmore was traveling with this brother and the brother’s family (wife and children).

Using the guideline that the family arrived in America prior to 1727, the possibilities for B01 ? Gilmore from the Passenger and Immigration Lists are:

  • James Gillmor NH 1718
  • Samuel Gillmor NH 1718
  • Robert Gilmore NH 1718
  • Samuel Gilmore America 1664
  • John Gillmore 21 Maryland 1683
  • William Gilmore America 1680-1720
  • Thomas Gilmer VA 1720
  • William Gillmour NJ 1685

There where 4 Gilmore men above that might be related somehow who migrated to America between 1718 and 1721 from Aghadowey Parish, County Londonderry, Ireland and landed in Boston, MA. They were William Gilmore, Robert Gilmore, James Gillmor, and Samuel Gillmor. The first three men settled for a time in Londonderry, NH; however, I can’t find Samuel Gillmor in any record after his initial arrival to America. I’m focusing some research on proving or disproving that this Samuel Gillmor is the B01 ? Gilmore of the Gilmores of this sketch. To help guide this search, later records in Cumberland Co., NC and Wilkes Co., GA hint at Gilmore connections to be found in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Another guide to finding B01 ? Gilmore is to look at related families.  The Heard line and Mahoney line that are related to the Family B Gilmore’s appear to have no record of immigration to America. The Heard genealogy compiled by Poole, only has an estimation of immigration in about 1720.

If there is anyone else interested in extending the Gilmore Family prior to Albemarle Co., VA in 1745, here are some surnames to look for that are associated to B01[1] John Gilmore from Albemarle Co., VA land records–Heard, Mahoney, Sorrell, Collins, Flinn, Boyd, Maxfield, and Dillon.  Check the Gilmore Chronology page for more detail.  Taking into account the history of Scotch-Irish migration and Highland Scot migration, and the first records of the Family B Gilmores in America, I can estimate that these Gilmores either migrated from Argyllshire Scotland in 1739 or from somewhere in Uster Ireland (possibly County Londonderry or Tyrone) after 1717. If I ever get the opportunity to research in these two areas, I’ll be looking for the names Hugh, Hughriah/Huriah, Samuel, John, James, Thomas, William Gilmore in association with surnames Mahoney, Collins, Heard, Armstrong, Matthews, Johnston, Thornton, Lynch, and Thompson .

The exact relationship of the boys listed as B01 ? Gilmore’s children below aren’t known for sure. The only concrete relationships I have at this level is that B02[3] Huriah Gilmore is a cousin to B01[3] Hugh Gilmore and probably B01[1] John Gilmore and that B02 Hughriah Gilmore is the father of  B02[3] Huriah Gilmore and Eleanor Gilmore. Beyond these relationships, everything else is hypothesis in Generations 1-3.

I am working on a hypothesis that Ann (Mahoney)is the wife of B01 ? Gilmore.  I can’t form a positive hypothesis until I get a feel for her age. The record I found of Ann Gilmore is a will of James Mahoney. James Mahoney wills Ann Gilmore a mare in his will probated 16 May 1753 in Albemarle Co., VA and Ann signed the will as a witness. Also in the will, James Mahoney wills Stephen Heard B01[1] John Gilmore’s brother-in-law) his plantation.

B01 ? Gilmore may have had the following children:

B01[1]  JOHN GILMORE was born about c1725 in PA, MA, MD, VA, NH Ireland or Scotland????. He died before 1786 in Cumberland Co, NC or Wilkes Co., GA. He married JANE HEARD, possible daughter of George Heard, about 1745 in Albemarle Co., VA?.3  She was born between 1725-1730.

B01[2]  *WILLIAM GILMORE was born between 1730-1740 in PA, MA, MD, VA, NH Ireland or Scotland?????. He died after 1767 in  Craven Co., SC or Marion Co. where possible brother died.

B01[3]  *HUGH GILMORE was born between 1730-1740 in PA, MA, MD, VA, NH Ireland or Scotland?????. He died after 1830 in Pike Co., GA???. He married SUSANNAH.

B01[4]  *STEPHEN GILMORE was born about 1735 in PA, MA, MD, VA, NH Ireland or Scotland?????. He died on 18 Apr 1812 in Cumberland Co., NC. He married AMY MATTHEWS. She was born about 1743. She died on 17 Jan 1810 in Cumberland Co., NC.

B01[5]  *SAMUEL GILMORE

B01[6]  **BOY GILMORE was born between 1720-1740. He married ISABELLE.

Notes for **boy Gilmore:

**Boy  Gilmore might be (?James, John, or Thomas?) based on the tradition of naming the oldest son after the father. I’m working on the hypothesis that this **boy Gilmore is the patriarch of Family A.  Look at Family A to see **boy Gilmore’s possible children.

Notes for Isabelle:
Isabelle Gilmore was a widow who received land along Cranes Creek in Moore Co., NC in 1768. Within a year’s period of time, a Hugh Gilmore of Anson Co., NC and a Samuel Gilmore Sr. also moved to Moore Co., NC–Hugh onto Governors Creek near Humphrey and George Gilmore, and Samuel Sr. on Cranes Creek.

Could widow Isabelle Gilmore, Hugh Gilmore and Samuel Gilmore Sr. have travelled at a later date from New England, Pennsylvania or Maryland, and settled briefly in Anson Co., NC before moving closer to the rest of the family? I am looking for records that suggest they stayed in Lancaster Co., PA at least until 1759–when A02 John Gilmore stated in his pension that he was born there–then possibly moved to Maryland and onto NC.

B02 HUGHRIAH GILMORE was born about 1711 in Ulster Ireland or Highland Scotland????. He and his wife died in 1761 likely in Marion Co., SC.

Notes for Huriah/Hughriah “Hugh” Gilmore:

Hughriah Gilmore is in a 1749 deed having bought land in Johnston Co., NC off the Neuce River. A man I believe to be his son, Huriah Gilmore, states in his pension that he was born on the Neuce River and that his parents moved to the Big Pee Dee in SC then died when he was very young. He lists his birth year as 1749. A Hugh Gilmore was granted land there in 1759 and recorded a Memorial for this land in Mar. 1761, then toward the end of 1761, in Cumberland Co., NC, orphan “Hugh” Gilmore age 12 is handed to Hugh Gilmore as an apprentice and orphan Eleanor Gilmore is under the guardianship of John Gilmore.

I believe that the Hugh in Craven Co., SC is the same man as Hughriah and orphan Hugh (who according to the above record was born in 1749) is a shortened version of Huriah. In short, I believe orphan Hugh and Huriah Gilmore who applied for pension in Macoupin Co., IL are the same person and the father is Hughriah Gilmore and he is the same person who received a grant as Hugh Gilmore in Craven Co., SC.

I listed an unnamed daughter here because Huriah Gilmore Jr. mentioned in his pension that he had a grown sister when he was born. I’ve calculated her age to be 18 years older than Huriah though this could vary either way by several years. He also mentions in his pension application that he was raised by a cousin so I believe that the Hugh Gilmore Huriah was given to as an apprentice is the “cousin” Huriah spoke of. This would make Hughriah Gilmore Sr. the Uncle of the Hugh Gilmore that raised Huriah Jr.

If there was a grown sister when Huriah was born, more than likely there were other children as well.

Hughriah “Hugh” Gilmore had the following children:

B02[1] DAUGHTER GILMORE was born about 1731.

B02[2] ELEANOR GILMORE

B02[3] HURIAH GILMORE was born in 1749 in Johnson Co., NC on Neuce  River. 4   He died on 03 Jul 1844 in Carlinville, Macoupin Co., IL. He married HARRIET WILEY. She died before 1830.

Generation 2

B01[1] JOHN GILMORE (?2, ?1) was born about 1725 probably in America (possibly NH, MD or PA).2 He died before 1786 in Cumberland Co, NC or Wilkes Co., GA. He married Jane Heard, possible daughter of George Heard, about 1745 in Albemarle Co., VA??????. 3   She was born between 1725-1730.

Notes for John Gilmore:

The earliest record of B01[1] John Gilmore is a will in Albemarle Co., VA in 28 Mar 1745 whereby he is mentioned with Stephen Heard as witness to the will of William Collins. Appraisers of the estate were Stephen Heard, Thomas Fitzpatrick, William Morrison, and John Gilmore. The only other Gilmores seen in Albemarle records are Jane “Heard” Gilmore always mentioned with her husband John Gilmore and an Ann Gilmore mentioned in the Will of James Mahoney in 1753.

Though there is no marriage record for John Gilmore and Jane, it appears that her surname is most likely Heard. Two records in Albemarle Co., VA allude strongly to a surname of Heard. In Deed BK 1 of Albemarle Co., VA on pp. 56-60 there are two deed records whereby George Heard of Charles City Co., VA is selling land on Rockfish River in Albemarle Co., VA (the area where John and Jane Gilmore lived along with possible brother or cousin to Jane, Stephen Heard) to his three sons William Heard, John Heard, and James Heard. John Gillmore, Jane Gillmore(possible niece or grandchild to George Heard), and Stephen Heard (Possible nephew to George Heard) were witness to these deeds. Also take into account that most every record John Gilmore is mentioned in in Albemarle Co., VA has Heard names in them plus John Gilmore and his progeny along with some of the Heard family seem to have migrated together into Cumberland/Moore Co., NC, GA and AL and there is a strong case for Heard as Jane’s surname.

I estimate that John Gilmore married Jane Heard around 1745. So this was probably in Albemarle Co., VA as, according to the Joyce Perkerson Poole Genealogy, her “possible” father or great Uncle, Charles Heard, lived in Albemarle possibly as early as 1741 (which was Goochland Co., VA at the time and becomes Albemarle in 1745). Marriage records for this county don’t exist any early than about 1790’s and the record for marriage isn’t in Goochland Co archives either. If the marriage was earlier it may have been in Charles City Co., VA were Jane’s possible grandfather, George Heard, lived. Already checked Goochland Co., VA and not there.

I need to explain some of the comments I’ve made about Jane Heard’s possible father Charles Heard and grandfather George Heard. According to the Poole genealogy (and assigning the numbers to the names that she has), the #1 Charles Heard and #60 George Heard mentioned here were probable brothers. Poole believes Jane Heard might be the daughter of #1 Charles Heard.

This might be true but I think the possibility also exists that she is the granddaughter of #60 George Heard and daughter of one of #60 George Heard’s children, #5 George Heard Jr. who died in Albemarle Co., VA before 1748. My reasoning is tradition again of naming the second child after the mother’s father. If you believe that George Gilmore is the second son of John and Jane Heard Gilmore then by tradition Jane’s father’s name is George Heard. Very speculative but I’m just saying the possibility exists. So we really don’t know who Jane’s father is but the two probabilities are #5 George or #1 Charles Heard.

By 24 Sept. 1755, B01[1] John Gilmore and his family move to Cumberland Co., NC where John records a land entry for 200 acres of land on the South side of NW Cape Fear River on Crains Creek & on a branch of Lower Little River above Crain’s Settlement; a place called Hog Ford.  In 5 Dec. 1757 John Gilmore has a patent for said land.  At this point, in Cumberland Co., NC two other Gilmore men have land entries in Sept 1754 and Mar 1756, William and Hugh respectively; and in 1757 Stephen Gilmore shows up applying for a patent in Dec 1757.  I believe all these men are related but there is no hint of what the relationship might be–possible brothers?  It is known that Stephen Gilmore’s birth years is c1735 so he could be a younger brother to John Gilmore.  Where were William, Hugh and Stephen Gilmore when John Gilmore was living in Albemarle Co., VA 1745-1754?

The children listed for John and Jane Heard Gilmore are thought to be theirs based on circumstantial evidence. The Gilmore “kids” lived in close proximity to each other in Cumberland Co., NC and are mentioned together sometimes in various deeds of land in that county along w/ their proposed father John Gilmore Sr. Also, all these men, excluding their proposed father moved to Wilkes Co., GA and are also living in close proximity to each other there too. And a final point, both Humphrey and George Gilmore appeared to have named their first 2 children John and Jane.

However, there is room for error in naming B01[1] John Gilmore the father of all the 3rd generation kids named below as there were other Gilmore men possibly of the same generation and living near B01[1] John Gilmore who could potentially also be the father of the kids in question.  The Gilmore other than John Gilmore who also has a good chance of being the father is the Hugh Gilmore mentioned above.  William Gilmore moved out of Cumberland Co., NC into SC before these kids came of age, and Stephen Gilmore would be too young for the majority of the below kids plus his kids are accounted for through is will.

John Gilmore and Jane Heard possibly had the following children:

B01[1]1*SAMUEL GILMORE was born on 22 Mar 1748 in Albemarle Co., VA. He died on 18 Mar 1800 in Tatnall Co., GA. He married ELIZABETH (FOLK) about 1781 in Cumberland Co., NC.  5  She was born on 02 Oct 1756. 6  She died on 21 Jul 1830 in Tatnall Co., GA.

B01[1]2 GEORGE GILMORE was born in 1749 in Albemarle Co., VA. He died after 1830 in Pike Co.?, AL. He married ANNA WILEY.

B01[1]3  HUMPHREY GILMORE was born on 10 Apr 1751 in Albemarle Co., VA*. He died on 03 Jan 1802 in Greene Co., GA. He married Catherine Wiley, daughter of William Wiley and (Elizabeth), on 13 Dec 1772 in Cumberland Co., NC. She was born on 09 Mar 1753 in Va?.

B01[1]4 CHARLES HEARD GILMORE was born about 1753 in VA or NC. . 7  He died before 1807 in Baldwin Co., GA.5, 8

Notes for Charles Heard Gilmore:

DAR records states Charles’ death as 1818 but the  entry in the 1807 land lottery in GA indicates that he died before 1807 as the orphans of Charles H. Gilmore are listed. No documents found as yet w/ the names of these orphans.

B01[1]5 (ELIZABETH) GILMORE was born about 1754.

B01[1]6 JAMES GILMORE was born on 13 Nov 1755 in Cumberland Co., NC. He died on 03 Jan 1835 in Washington Co., GA.

B01[1]7 JOHN GILMORE was born about 1756 in GA. John died in 1804 in Grainger Co., TN.

B01[2]  *WILLIAM GILMORE (?2, ?1) was born between 1730-1740 in PA, MA, MD, VA, NH Ireland or Scotland?????. He died after 1767 last living in Craven Co., SC (maybe Marion Co. where possible uncle died?).

Notes for (?William?) Gilmore:

This William Gilmore was in Cumberland County, NC at least by 9 May 1753 which was Bladen Co., NC at the time. He is mentioned on this date in a patent by John Patterson as “the place where Wm Gilmore did live” “on the head of a branch of Rockfish creek”.  Sometime between Feb. 1763 and 18 May 1767, William Gilmore moved to Craven Co., SC which at that time people considered covered most of South Carolina. The boundries of the county are a bit ambiguous as it was never properly laid out. A History of Craven Co., SC on www.carolana.com by J. D. Lewis c2007 states “If one were to attempt to determine which of the current SC counties are actually situated within the last incarnation of Craven County prior to its elimination in 1768, the best guess would have to include: all of Horry, Georgetown, Williamsburg, Marion, Darlington, Florence, Dillon, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Lee, and Lancaster counties, and parts of Charleston, Berkeley, Clarendon, Sumter, and Kershaw Counties.” That’s a lot of territory to cover.

The three daughters come from a book of minutes in Cumberland Co., NC. An entry made Oct. 1756 where William Gilmore gave a gift of items to daughters Rachael, Nanny, and Marren/Maria the transaction was proved by Thomas Jones and John Mc[Cartney].

*William Gilmore had the following children:

B01[2][1] RACHAEL GILMORE

B01[2][2] MARIA/MARREN GILMORE

B01[2][3]NANCY/NANNY GILMORE

B01[5] *SAMUEL GILMORE (?2, ?1).

Notes for *Samuel Gilmore:

This Samuel is meant to be the one who shows up in Cumberland/Moore Co., NC land records in 1768 as living on Crains Creek near Anna Collins.

Note: There is a connection between Gilmore and Collins through William Collins in Albemarle Co., VA whose will was proved by oaths of B01[1] John Gilmore and Stephen Heard in 1745. I’m wondering if there is any familial link 23 years later between this widow Anna Collins and the Family B Gilmores or the Heards. The executrix was Margaret Collins so I deduce she was William Collins’ wife.  Maybe Anna (?Gilmore/Heard?) married one of William Collins’ sons?.

*Samuel Gilmore had the following child:

B01[5]1 *HUGH GILMORE

Notes for *Hugh Gilmore:

I believe this Hugh Gilmore to be the one who moved from Anson Co., NC to Governor’s Creek in Moore Co., NC in 1767, 1.5 miles south of Humphrey and George Gilmore. I think he’s related to Family B but not sure exactly how. Just guessing at this point.

B02[3] HURIAH GILMORE (Huriah/Hughriah “Hugh”2, ?1) was born in 1749 in Johnson Co., NC on Neuce River. He died on 03 Jul 1844 in Carlinville, Macoupin Co., IL. He married HARRIET WILEY. She died before 1830.

Chronology:

1756-1761 in Craven Co., SC (what is now Marion Co., SC)– Land grant for a Hugh Gilmore who I believe to be short for Hughriah had a series of land entries and finally a grant in 1759 and a memorial Mar 1761 before his death in 1761. I believe this Hughriah to be the father of Huriah.13

1761, Cumberland Co., NC–Court minutes of orphan Hugh Gilmore (Could this be Huriah Gilmore?) age 12 (this age fits with Huriah’s birthyear) given to Hugh Gilmore as an apprentice. (Huriah later states in his pension appl. that he was raised by his cousin though he doesn’t mention a name. The hypothesis here is that the Hugh Gilmore mentioned as the guardian is that cousin.)14

18 Apr 1771, Cumberland Co., NC–Land entry for Huriah Gilmore on School House Br of Governors Creek; between, Stephen Gilmore, Humphrey Gilmore, and George Gilmore.15

Jul 1777, Bedford Co., VA–Huriah Gilmore volunteered in Revolutionary War.16

Jul 1777-Oct 1781–Huriah Gilmore engaged in a total of three seperate campaigns in revoluationary war.16

30 Oct 1777, Cumberland Co, NC– Deed from Huriah Gilmore to Stephen Heard proved by Thos. Eliot (The Stephen Heard here might be a 2nd cousin to B01[1] John
Gilmore’s wife, Jane Heard).29

1782-1784, Rowan Co., NC; According to Huriah’s pension application, he lived for one of the years in the mentioned timespan in this county.16

1785-1793, Wilkes Co., NC–Huriah had 130 acres in District EE which became Dist DD. The best I can tell, this was a piece of land under dispute on whether it belonged to the
US of the indians. It appears to be the northern most tip of what is now Taliafarro Co., GA.17

1796 in Wilkes County, GA–Land entry for Huriah Gilmore who receives a grant for the 130 acres of land he’d been living on for 11 years.11

1796 in Oglethorpe Co., NC–Huriah Gilmore receives another land grant for 760 acres.11

1801,Greene Co., GA
1804-1805, Jackson Co., GA–for 500 ac.
1820, Warren Co., TN–1 boy 10-16 yrs and Huriah Gilmore at over 45 years
1828, Morgan Co., IL 16

1829, Pike Co., IL 16

1830, Pike County, IL census–1 boy 20-30 years, Huriah Gilmore 80-90 years, 2 girls 0-5 yrs, a woman 20-30, and a woman 30-40. (I believe the man & woman 20-30 is Huriah’s son Seaborne and his wife with 2 baby girls. No clue as to the 30-40 yr. woman)

1840 Macoupin Co., IL census–Head Seaborne Gilmore with 1boy 0-5 yrs, 1 girl 5-10 yrs, 2 girls 10-15 yrs, 1 woman 30-40, then an elder man (probably Huriah) 90-100 and an elder woman 80-90. Huriah Gilmore listed at the end of the census as a rev. war solder age 92.

Notes for Huriah Gilmore:

My information on Huriah Gilmore’s children is sadly one dimensional. At this point I’ve had to rely on census records for the most part so be prepared for a basic outline of this family. I did get a few golden nuggets from findagrave.com and a website from Sarah Neeley but that’s about it. Either I or another gungho genealogist will do some better research in the counties these Gilmores lived in in the future.

The *John and *Huriah Gilmore listed as son’s of Huriah Gilmore are strictly hypothesis.  Sarah Neely suspects them as sons on her website.

Huriah Gilmore and Harriet Wiley had the following children:

B02[3]1 *JOHN GILMORE

B02[2]2 *HURIAH GILMORE

B02[3]3  HENRY G GILMORE 9 was born in 1784 in Wilkes Co., GA.10 He died on 24 Jul 1846 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL. 10 He married (1) MARY G. MCDANIEL about 1804 in GA or TN.11 She was born on 18 Oct 1782 in TN.10 She died on 11 Nov 1828 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL.10 He married (2) CAROLINE (JOUETT OR VANWINKLE) about 1830 in TN or IL.12 She was born on 08 Nov 1804 in TN.10   She died on 10 Apr 1884 in Greene Co., IL.10
