He married Elizabeth “Betsy” Cartwright on 04 Jun 1802 in Greene Co., GA. She was born between 1770-1780. She died on 18 Oct 1844 in same as John Gilmore?.
Notes for John Gilmore:
The number of children in Reverend John Gilmore’s family is unknown. There is a census of a John Gilmore in Limestone County in the far northern part of Alabama; but the Rev. John Gilmore of this sketch is living in Clarke County in southwest Alabama at this time so it unlikely though possible given the length of time between federal census. According to Ophelia Gilmore, there are four proven Gilmore men: Peter Cartwright, Thomas Griffin, Wesley, and Archibald. She doesn’t provide the proof; however, an 1830 census of John Gilmore in Shelby County, TN supports what she says with the exception of Archibald. Since Archibald doesn’t appear to be in the 1830 ShelbyCounty, TN census, and I can find no other census record of him, I am unsure of his birthyear.
To give myself some idea of the number of children Rev. John and Elizabeth had, I’ve calculated the children and their ages based on when John and Elizabeth married and when the youngest child is born from the 1830 census with about 1.5 years distance in age between children; and fit the known children and their approximate ages within this calculated timeline. At the time the 1830 census was taken, I’d guess over half of Rev. John’s children married or died. Given that Archibald never appears to show up on any census or has yet to be found on any record I wonder if he died before 1830 and/or like his brother John Wesley Gilmore was known by his other given or middle name not mentioned by Ophelia Gilmore.
Between Rev. John Gilmore’s marriage date and the birth date of Peter Cartwright Gilmore I estimate three possible children. If they lived to adulthood, they would have been of marriageable age when John Gilmore was living in Clarke Co., AL between 1816-1829 There are two possible children from marriages in Clarke County: Starling Gilmore to Nancy Turner 1821 and Jeane (Jane?) Gilmore to Jordan Sanders in 1823; and one possible child married in Marengo County: Mary Gilmore to James Gilmore in 1826.
If I’m right about Starling and Jane being children of Rev. John Gilmore then the Judge who performed the wedding, Joel Heard, was their uncle–Nancy Gilmore Heard being Joel’s wife and Rev. John Gilmore’s sister. Records suggest that Starling and Jane Gilmore passed away before 1830 and the spouses remarried also before 1830. More explanation on their personal pages. It appears that Starling is a surname of English origin. I’m working on the possible significance of this name for Rev. John Gilmore. A middle name or first name for this Starling Gilmore might be Starling Archibald or Archibald Starling. Could one of these names be taken from a rather well known Methodist Minister like the other son’s? Haven’t found anything yet. As there is no census or other record showing the ages of Starling and Jane, I’ve put them in order of their marriages and estimated what their ages might have been. If Starling was born about 1803 then he would have been 18 at the time he married; and Jane would have been 25.
Mary Gilmore is a possiblity as a child simply because she is of the appropriate age and was born in GA which is where John Gilmore lived at the time of her birth (yes, big state, lots of land to cover and many Gilmores there). The end. Weak I know–just a possibiliy at this point. I’m in the process of trying to tie her more strongly into this family.
I can’t believe that Rev. John didn’t name one of his children after his father Humphrey Gilmore! Soooooo, another possibility for one of the three “possible” oldest children is a Humphrey Gilmore. Given that this given name never appears in any record along the trail that Rev. John forged through GA, TN, AL, and MS, if a child of this name existed he must have died before adulthood. Surely the first born son was named Humphrey–aaaaaaand back again to Starling possibly being Humphrey Starling or Starling Humphrey!
Please understand that these POSSIBLE children mentioned above may not have even reached adulthood, that there may only be two possibilities instead of three, and that I don’t even know from census records the possible sex of the children (only a 50/50 chance of getting that wrong if the child even existed!) Very frustrating not having a census model to go by at least giving a skeleton of the family.
Rev. John Gilmore was deeply involved in the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The connection to the Methodist Church seems to start with his father and continued strongly through his children.
According to Anson West’s “History of Methodism in Alabama” John joined the church in 1800 (probably in Greene Co, AL where records place them at the time), the year before his father was ordained a deacon of the church. In 1813, he was licensed to preach as a local preacher in Warren Co., TN (Ophelia’s notes) and in 1816 settled in the neighborhood of Woods Bluff, Clarke Co., AL right off the Tombigbee River and possibly traveling partway on the Tombigbee along the border of and then into the Indian territory. It was in Shelby Co., TN that his 3rd/4th? child Peter Cartwright Gilmore married and settled. This sojourn into Shelby Co., TN must have been brief because between 1830-1834 Rev. John Gilmore is living in Monroe Co., MS where his son John Wesley marries in 1834/5, his youngest? child Sarah Ann marries in 1836 and his son, Thomas Griffen marries (in the neighboring county of Lowndes) in 1838. It is the year before his last child marries that Rev. John Gilmore hits the big time and becomes an itinerant preacher for the Methodist Church serving the Columbus District which appears to cover most of Lowndes and Monroe Co.’s in MS and Pickens and Greene Co.’s AL (and maybe some of Sumpter Co, AL). He is credited with organizing the First Methodist Church in Aberdeen, Monroe Co., MS near the Tombigbee in 1837.
The time at which Reverend John Gilmore entered into the itinerency for the Methodist Church makes sense as the Methodist leaders were hesitant to put family men with children into this office as they did much traveling. Another term for the office is Circuit Rider. At the beginning of his career as a Circuit Rider, Reverend John Gilmore was 61 years of age. All of his appointments are well recorded in the Minutes for the Methodist Church conferences in the Alabama Conference. It appears that he stayed in the Monroe, MS/Lowndes, MS/ Pickens, AL/Greene, AL area (Columbus District) until 1843 when he was assigned the Walker Mission which served Fayette, Tuscaloosa, which at that time was the Alabama District of the Mississippi Conference. He was also ordinated a deacon at the same conference that John Gilmore was in Mobile, AL 1837. Granted, Thomas Griffin Gilmore was born prior to 1819 in 1817, so Rev. John Gilmore either knew Thomas Griffin before 1817 or I’m off the mark. I’ve not yet found which minister Archibald Gilmore might have been named after; and I can find no record of an Archibald anywhere in Alabama, Tennessee, or Mississippi who might be the son of Rev. John Gilmore. I probaby need to look at NC and GA.
John Gilmore and Elizabeth “Betsy” Cartwright had the following children:
B01[1]321 *STARLING (**ARCHIBALD) GILMORE was born about 1803 in GA. He died between 1821-1828 in Clarke Co., AL. He married Nancy Turner on 21 Mar 1821 in Clarke Co., AL. She was born between 1800-1810. She died. Must explore another possibility that Starling belongs to the Family F line as this family was also living in Clarke Co., AL.
B01[1]322 *JANE “JEANE” GILMORE was born about 1804. She died in Clarke Co., AL. She married Jordan Sanders on 06 Apr 1823 in Clarke Co., AL. He was born between 1790-1800. Must explore another possibility that Starling belongs to the Family F line as this family was also living in Clarke Co., AL.
B01[1]323 *MARY GILMORE was born about 1806 in GA. She married JAMES GILMORE Need to explore the possibility that this Mary belongs to the Family F Gilmore line.
Notes for James Gilmore:
This James Gilmore is a son of the Family A Gilmores. He is a son of the John Gilmore who fought in the revolutionary war and came to the Mississippi/Alabama Territory in 1806.
B01[1]324 PETER CARTWRIGHT GILMORE was born about 1807 in GA. He died before 1860 in AR or TN. He married Elizabeth West on 14 Nov 1829 in Shelby Co., TN. She was born about 1814 in NC. She died before 1870.
B01[1]325 CHILD? GILMORE was born about 1809.
B01[1]326 CHILD? GILMORE was born in 1810.
B01[1]327 JOHN WESLEY GILMORE was born in Jan 1812 in Morgan Co, GA. He died on 16 Mar 1901 in Davilla, Milam Co., TX (buried @ Friendship cemetery). He married (1) MARTHA “PATSY” WEAVER, daughter of Frederick Weaver and Frances Willie, about 1835 in Monroe Co., MS. She was born on 12 Jul 1818 in Monroe Co., MS. She died on 08 Jan 1873 in Hays Co., TX. He married (2) ELVINA MASSEY CRAPPS in 1877 in Hays Co., TX. She was born about 1818 in Georgia. She died in Hays Co., TX.
B01[1]328 CHILD? GILMORE was born about 1814.
B01[1]329 THOMAS GRIFFIN GILMORE was born on 17 Aug 1817 in Blount Co.?, AL. He died on 05 Nov 1889 in Dew, Freestone Co., TX (Dew Church Cemetery). He married (1) MARY ANN TUCKER (MCQUAGGE?) about 10 Dec 1846 in Lowndes Co., MS. (NOTE: A History of Freestone Co., TX article states that Thomas Griffen’s wife was a Mary McQuagge and they married in Walton Co., FL but he appears to be living in the Itawamba/Monroe Co., MS area at the time he married so it seems unlikely that his wife was Mary Ann McQuagge; however, I’m not dismissing the possibility.) She was born on 22 Feb 1822 in LA?. She died on 09 Dec 1876 in Dew, Freestone Co., TX (Dew Church Cemetery). He married (2) MARGARET HARRINGTON between 1877-1880 while on Kosse Circuit for Methodist Church. She was born on 19 Jan 1826 in MS. She died on 03 May 1903 in Bremond, Robertson Co., TX.
B01[1]32(10)*SARAH ANN GILMORE was born about 1819 in AL. She died in TX. She married Nicholas Thurmon Riggans on 07 Feb 1836 in Monroe Co., MS. He was born about 1806 in NC.
B01[1]33 ELIZABETH GILMORE (Humphrey4, John3, ?2, ?1) was born on 13 Apr 1779 in Cumberland Co., NC. She died in 1812 in Jasper Co., GA. She married Bartley Pierce on 02 Feb 1802 in Greene Co., GA. He was born between 1770-1780 in NC?. He died before 1840 in Lowndes Co., AL.
Notes for Bartley Pierce:
It’s very difficult to research this family as information is sketchy and he lived in areas where there was no census until 1830. He did leave a will in Lowndes Co., AL according to a message on the genforum website under the Pearce or Pierce forum; however there is no date attached to when the will was written though it can be estimated sometime between 1830-1840.
Given where he was married, I at least know he was in Green Co., GA in 1802 and lived for a time in Jasper Co., at least by 1817, then left and moved into Lowndes Co., AL about 1819 where he bought land and settle until the end of his days.
This family is a complicated research project and requires much more than my cursory toe dip into the limited on line records to properly record it. Given time restrains I’m not able to make a proper job of it at this point, so any information on the children of this family that you get here, is in the hypothetical stage except for the children mentioned in Bartley Pierce’s will and even then their ages are estimates.
There is at least the 1830 census record in Lowndes Co., AL to help give a partial outline to this family though it is probably missing most of the children by his first wife. Because of the possible missing children I’ve estimated given a birth of a child about every two years, that Bartley and Elizabeth probably had about 6 children before she died (possible first child born at the end of 1802 or beginning of 1803 then every two years after that up to 1812); and I estimate tthat Bartley and Phoebe had about 8 children starting at the end of 1817 and going up to 1830 according to the 1830 census. The “children” that you see below, therefore, are an outline based on the previous reasoning of a child every two years, the 1830 census and Bartley’s will. The placement of the “known” children come from finding their approximate ages in later census records if indeed I have the correct record and not someone elses child of a similar name.
The known children of Bartley Pierce are Elisha, Eliza (listed as over 14 in Bartley’s will), Edward, Lovett, and Cader (listed as under 14 in Barley’s will). There are two Pierce children listed with his 2nd wife that aren’t in the will–J. W. bc1818 GA and Martha A/B bc1829 AL. There is a James Wesley Pierce listed as a brother to Bartley but I doubt the J. W. bc1818 is Bartley’s brother as there is at least a 40 year gap in age. Because the 1850 census seems to indicate that not all of Bartley’s living children were in the will, I’ve taken some liberties in naming “possible” children of Bartley and Elizabeth that weren’t mentioned–to be explained with their names.
Bartley Pierce and Elizabeth Gilmore had the following children:
B01[1]331 CHILD PIERCE was born about 1802 in GA.
B01[1]332 (**JOHN**) PIERCE was born about 1804 in GA.
Notes for (**John**) Pierce:
John Pierce here is “strictly” a possibility, nothing more. At this point other than he lived in Jasper Co., GA and is of a favorable age range, there is nothing tying him to this family.
B01[1]333 (**WILEY C**) PIERCE was born about 1806 in GA.
Notes for (**Wiley C**) Pierce:
Wiley C. Pearce is found in the 1840 and 1850 census’ for Lowndes Co., AL. The “Wiley” flew out and slapped me on the face saying “Gilmore…Gilmore…Gilmore”. It was a common given name for Elizabeth Gilmore’s family so I included it as a possiblity. His age range is right and he isn’t in any of the other Pearce households.
B01[1]334 CHILD PIERCE was born about 1808 in GA.
B01[1]335 BOY PIERCE was born about 1810 in GA.
Notes for boy Pierce:
This boy enumerated in the 1830 Lowndes Co., AL census. Elisha, a son mentioned in Bartley’s will, may be this boy or he may be the next child which is where I placed him. I can’t find a census on him so he may have died before 1840 just after his father’s will was made.
B01[1]336 ELISHA PIERCE was born about 1812 in GA.
Notes for Elisha Pierce:
Refer to boy Pierce bc1810 for comments.
