167. B01[1]327(11)4 NORMAN EDWARD8 GILMORE (George Shafer7, John Wesley6, John5, Humphrey4, John3, ?2, ?1) was born on 18 Oct 1881 in Hays Co., TX. He died on 14 Nov 1942 in Bell Co., TX (Hilcrest Cem, Temple). He married Mary Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of Benjamin Riley Edwards, about 1905 in Hays Co., TX. She was born on 29 May 1881 in Floresville, Wilson Co., TX. She died on 23 Jan 1954 in Houston, Harris Co., TX (Buried in Hilcrest Cem, Temple, Bell Co., TX).
Notes for Norman Edward Gilmore:
“Interview with Norman Edward Gilmore’s grandson, Duck”
Norman Edward Gilmore was called “Pap” by his grandchildren and his wife was “Mam”. Duck’s fondest memory of Pap was that he was a cowboy. That breed of hard working, tough, never back down men who were the backbone of Texas at that time. In the time Duck knew him, he lived in a bunk house on the Frankie Ranch in Uvalde, Uvarlde Co., TX, and his job was to break the horses. According to Duck’s recollections, Pap never owned land of his own. Duck remembered he lived shortly in Bell Co., TX, first in Rogers, then in Pendleton where Duck’s dad, George Nolan Gilmore married Mildred Janette Forrest.
Pap died from an infected infury he aquired from breaking horses. Duck’s sister, Linnie, was about 2 or 3 years at the time, and Duck was about seven. Duck remembers that it was wintertime. Linnie’s daughter, Sherry Jo Anderson Castillo, who is a doctor, speculated Pap probably contracted gangrene as a result of the injury. He was not the type of man who would have sought medical help. Both Pap and Mam are buried in the Hillcrest Cemetary in Temple, Bell Co., TX.

Interview with Leslie “Pete” Gilmore
Leslie “Pete” Gilmore was born 19 June 1910 in Dripping Springs, Hays County, TX. Paul “Peck” Gilmore, Pete’s cousin, remembers an Uncle Wash and Uncle Doc from Bastrop Co., TX which Pete doesn’t remember. All of Peck’s brothers are dead. Pete’s birth certificate was changed from baby Gilmore to Leslie Gilmore in the 1940’s. Pete was born at home which was seven miles from Dripping Springs going toward San Marcos, on Grandma Gilmore’s place. Dr. Shelton came in a buggy to deliver all three of Pete’s siblings. Pete’s DOB is wrong on his birth certificate. Tupie was born in Georgetown TX, on June 23, ????.
Pete’s family went to Rosburn, NM (I think Pete meant Roswell) in 1916 in a covered wagon to check out a homestead. If you live on a homestead for three years it becomes yours. Pete thinks this holds true today in NM. Norman Edward Gilmore, Pete’s dad did not like it so they came back to Hays Co., TX. They stayed for about two weeks. Pete remembers the trip vividly. They met a car on the trip that scared the mules. The trip took them three months one way. There’s a picture of the trip running around somewhere.
The Gilmore farm is where the Gallespie Ranch is now. Aunt Lou (Pete called her aunt Lou even though she was really his grandmother) had an axe she took down to the storm cellar. This was so she could get back out if the cellar ever caved.
Aunt Lou’s mother was Cherokee. (Author’s note: I haven’t been able to find any Cherokee blood in the family.) Great grandma Bryant (Martha Barringer Bryant) was short and stumpy. She looked like an indian.
Great grandpa Bryant (Stephen Henry Bryant) would let them drink a glass of homemade muskadine wine on occasion. He hid out during the Civil War because he didn’t believe in it and refused to fight.
Great grandma Bryant smoked a corn cob pipe and dipped snuff as did Grandma Gilmore (Sarah Louise Bryant Gilmore). Grandma lived up into her 80’s and died 15 July 1939 in Austin, TX. (Pete thought she was buried in Buda but she was actually buried next to Gatlin creek in the Gatlin cemetery near Dripping Springs, TX.) Pete went to the funeral in Austin but didn’t go to the cemetery.
Pete said that Grandpa (George Shafer Gilmore) died of cancer. His dad told him that one of the girls scratched him on the neck and it turned into skin cancer on the jugular and he bled. Pete knew nothing of John Wesley Gilmore, his great grandfather. (Which makes since as John Wesley Gilmore died before he was born.)
The Gilmore ranch was bought by George Shafer Gilmore. He owned a syrup mill and made syrup every summer. Pete used to drive the mule around a vat to stir the syrup. The syrup was loaded into gallon buckets and sold in Austin. Pete’s dad did the same thing.
Uncle Charlie lived on Mount Gainor. Uncle Will went to California. Grandma Lou stayed with Aunt Fannie who was a registered nurse and married to a Zapalac. A boy was a result of this marriage, George who lived in Houston. The boy George and Tupie were close. Fannie and her husband separated. Glenn (about Pete’s age) and Aubrey (who was younger) Garrett were the children of Aunt Drew who went to California around 1920. Nelson was the son of Aunt Mattie. He’s dead. Aunt Mattie had three girls—Lila, Daisy Nell, and Althea. Uncle Tom Massy was Pap’s cousin. He’s dead. He’s the only Massy that Pete remembers. A lot of Massys moved to Oklahoma. Mama had a sister named Mayoli (Mattie Viola Edwards Jenkens). (Mama was Mary Elizabeth Edwards). Edith and Nolan (George Nolan Gilmore) were born in 1907, the same year that Grandpa Gilmore (George Shafer) died. Ernestine, Tupie’s wife has all the Gilmore pictures. She’s living in Nebraska.
Pete said the Gilmore’s were English and Scottish. Grandma Gilmore started calling Leslie, Pete. Grandma Edward’s name was Henson before her marriage. (Mary Elizabeth Edward Gilmore’s mom, Amanda Henson Edwards).
This interview was conducted at Pete’s house on 18 Jan 1995 by Janet Anderson in Pasadena, TX.
